Budding chef

Gabriel is working on a cookbook. He is taking the whole cooking thing very seriously and has begun cooking for friends. He even wants to cater Lisa's studio opening. This latest dish was Falafel and Stuffed Courgettes over rice. Dig the presentation.

He has a whole concept for the book which I won't reveal (yet). Who knows, maybe he'll be the first teenager to take on Ramsey on the F Word.

Everyone is a winner

Sligo captured the Connacht Cup with a 7-7 draw in Galway on Saturday. Even though we were willing to play into "sudden death" or a rematch, our opponents ended the day with a shared cup victory. We were pressuring late into the game and just couldn't punch the ball across for the decider.

Gabe's first year of rugby was memorable and considering the U-14s won the cup as well, the future looks bright for the Sligo side for years to come. Up Sligo!

Push!

Sligo U13 rugby club pushed their way into the Connacht Cup final next week in Galway following a convincing 27-12 victory over the Athlone Buccaneers. The score was 15-0 at the half and 27-0 with not much time remaining when the substitutes gave up two quick scores.

Gabe had two assists and is pictured in the centre of the maul as the pack lumbered close to a score. The Sligo side was mighty and rose to the defensive occasion when they needed it. Our side looks to avenge a close, but high-scoring loss next week against Galwegians.

Mud Delay

The semi-final match this weekend in Athlone was called at the half on account of the pitch conditions. The re-match will be this weekend in Sligo.

Sligo advances to semi-final

Gabe delivers a bit of hurt in the second half of Sligo's 30-7 defeat of Creggs this afternoon. The win puts them through to the semi-final, just two matches away from a potential championship cup victory.

Rollin'

The Sligo U-13s rolled to a decisive win over Monivea in the first round of cup play. Gabe scored two of Sligo's eight tries in the 48-10 win. Monivea didn't put any points on the board after the first half, and even a "pitch made of pudding" following a week of rain couldn't slow the Sligo relentless attack.

Next week, Creggs. This is single elimination cup play.

Try and catch me

Picture of the day from the Sligo thrashing of Carrick 29-12. I'd like to think regardless of the quality of glass you are using that the photographer still has something to do with the picture. :-) One of my favourite photography quotes was from Minor White. "Spirit stands still for the photographer it has chosen." Team spirit in this case.

Gabe has been moved to flanker from wing and is enjoying even more physical contact. Doesn't he just look like a happy pig in mud?

Tough Break

Sligo 15, Westport 17

Gabriel scored a stunning try, breaking several tackles while managing to stay in bounds. Photographer turned into mere father and cheered him on, despite missing the perfect shot. It wasn't enough to defeat Westport, who scored a quick try on their first possession of the match. The scoreboard didn't reflect the effort of the Sligo side. Great effort.

The match ended on a scary note when a Westport player broke his leg. You could hear the 'crack' all the way down the sideline.

Well you can tell by the way I use my walk

On Friday night, Gabe went to his first disco. I was a 'steward' out in the parking lot checking for tickets and screening for alcohol. That was a treat from 9PM-12AM on a cold crisp night in February. At least it was dry.

I'll sum up the evening by saying how happy I am to have a teenage son and not a teenage daughter. There were a few moments of "youth gone wild" head shaking. The majority of the 450 attendees had a great time, happily suffering deafness while gesticulating wildly on the cramped dance floor.

Catch him if you can

What a fantastic pic, captured by Jonathan Hill at the last Sligo R.F.C. match. Unfortunately the outcome was a loss.

I can't believe this is the same kid starting school in Ireland in September 2006.

What a day ...

We had our first snow of the season. It was just below freezing and a flurry of activity left a nice dusting everywhere. The temperature didn't last and neither did the snow, mostly all wiped away by a hard rain over the evening.

Gabe and I had traveled up to Enniskillen in Northern Ireland. I believe they got a few quick inches, which would have been nothing in the States, but here, everything ground to a halt. I was in Enniskillen to get my night guard repaired/replaced and many people cross the border to avail of cheaper dentistry. Now, I can't remember exactly what it cost to have a standard , molded night guard made in the States, but here it was £25 and they had it for me in two hours. The specialised one I had made before leaving was easily over $1500 including all the doctors visits, etc.

The dental technician had a shop front to the left of Hot Wok and to the right of a deli. It was a little disconcerting that when I walked into the "office", which was more like a lab, he plunged his fingers into my mouth without even washing. He even mixed up the mold goo in a bowl that was sitting on the counter. But I suppose you get what you pay for.

While getting into the car across the street in the Dunnes Store's parking lot, Gabe was creating snow footballs and turned to me and said "Watch this, Dad." With a swift kick the snowball disintegrated and his shoe shot a few meters into the air and over a wall into the next lot. Funniest moment of the day.

The day ended on a downer as we had to take Neo to the vet. He hasn't eaten and is very lethargic. He may have hit on the road and had a high fever. He spent the night in Sligo and we hope for good news from the doctor today.

Three in a row

As the Steelers fortunes move in the opposite direction, the Sligo Rugby Club U-13s have enjoyed three wins in row. Gabe hasn't experienced a loss yet and they rolled over Castlebar 24-14, holding a 24-0 lead deep into the second half.

Gabe also had his third "almost-try" in three games on a long run, and played some great aggressive defense. Lisa and I traveled down to the match on the team bus.

01 December 2007

First start

Gabe started at left wing for Sligo and played the entire game. He had the longest run of the match, reversing field, running the length of the pitch only to be denied a try at the line. Creggs wasn't in the match at all with a 21-5 score at the half and a convincing final of 26-12. Up Sligo!

(No that isn't Gabe in the pic, but couldn't resist putting up the shot.)

Try and try again

Gabe played in his first official rugby match on Saturday. The setting of the pitch is beautiful in Strandhill with Knocknarea to the back of you and the ocean on the other side. That is, unless the weather is coming off the ocean and hitting you upside the head.

The parents may have been miserable in the cold, driving rain, but could a group of boys be any happier than tackling each other on a muddy pitch? Gabe took a face-first plunge shortly after getting into the action and turned to face me with a sopping wet, soil eating grin on his face.

The Sligo side beat a good Westport team 19-14. Gabe barely missed a try with seconds remaining when the maul was stood-up at the goal line.

Oh the irony

While driving to work, I put on the album Black Market by Weather Report. I remember as a kid throwing ridiculous temper tantrums to get my Dad to turn off this music. Coincidentally, Jaco Pastorius was born in Norristown, PA, a town or so over from where I eventually went to high school.

I also used to torture my parents with my Atari 2600, or incessant begging to play me in some game where I would play endlessly as they awaited a turn. Gabe has turned the tables on me by annihilating me in Starcraft after devouring the strategy guides. I did get my revenge the other night, patiently pecking away at his defenses before sending in a massive fleet of destroyers and wraiths to finish him off ...

Kerry? 0-Ate?

Gabe found a potato he says resembles the head of John Kerry? Regardless, I admire the fine camera work he accomplished using the built in camera on the iMac. Great pic.

Congrats Gabe!

Considering Gabe went from never having seen a Gaelic football, to starting for his team that made it to the semi-finals in his league; it wasn't a huge surprise he was given one of two year-end awards for football at his school. Most improved player no doubt.

The trophy is actually a pretty nice piece. The first of many to grace the case in the sun room?? We'll see. Good one, Gabe.

09 June 2007

Maybe next year

Gabe was one win away from becoming the first American (according to his headmaster) to play gaelic football at Markievicz Park in Sligo, though a badly played first half led to an eventual 5-11, 4-7 defeat to Achonry. The day couldn't have been more beautiful (perhaps even a bit too hot) minus the outcome.

However, the Geevagh girls are on to the finals, continuing a mini dynasty from this part of the county. Up Geevagh!

The Winch and the Wardrobe

Lisa came down with the flu so I moved into the spare bedroom to sleep. This room has been functioning as a wardrobe for all our clothes and a storage space for Lisa's studio as well. Gabe took the opportunity to turn this into a camping expedition with Dad and sacked out next to me.

Gabe has this annoying sleeping habit I'll call "the winch." He rolls toward you on his back, grabs a handful of covers and rolls away from you, effectively removing your coverage and locking the sheets and blankets underneath him. Your only options are to wait for "the winch" to turn back to you and unlock so you can pull the covers back; tug violently on the covers, which often results in "sleep tugging" where you get audible grunts and an apparent super-human burst of strength from your opponent; or just get your own blanket.

Perfect ending

The perfect ending to Easter Sunday was fishing with Gabe at Lough Bo, just a few minutes from the house. Though it is claimed that pike and trout are plentiful in the lake, we didn't leave with any fish. It was worth the trip just to stand in the tranquil water and watch the sun set over the hills.
