Halloween Playlist

Gabe is nearly thirteen and he was ready to start watching some scary films this Halloween. Lisa was away at a conference so it was the perfect setting for a guy’s night at the movies. We went into town to track down DVD copies of The Hidden and John Carpenter’s The Thing. Even with a great remake in The Thing, DVD shops don’t stock older films. We struck out. We figured we’d go to the theatre and see Black Sheep, but it wasn’t on until the evening.

I couldn’t remember the name of the recent creature film from Korea and luckily, there it was in Tesco of all places. I was bummed that there wasn’t a third film of quality, or we could have picked up Pan’s Labyrinth along with The Host, or as it is known in Korea, Gwoemul.

We both thought the film was great. Realistic effects (which can sink a creature film if they aren’t good). Authentic reactions of panic (like above). A good mix of humor juxtaposed against terror. Very well done indeed. Apparently it has shattered all box-office records in Korea.

There is a rumor that a US remake is in the works. You can ONLY mess this up in a remake. See the original.
