A few people have asked me about the cost of living over here compared to the States. Here is a great illustration … and think about this one the next time you whine about gas prices while consuming more fossil fuels than any country on the planet.
I filled up my Toyota Corolla for €44.20, which is currently $59.79. That was for 36.86 liters of gas or 9.74 gallons. At €1.19/liter, that equates to $6.14/gallon.
The only upside I can think of in this equation is that I was getting 42.1 mpg, and that is with a pretty heavy dose of non-highway driving.

Yikes!!! That’s nuts!
I just saw Michael Moore’s* “Sicko”, so I am further interested in hearing about your medical insurance coverage in Ireland. What’s your 1-10 rating, compared to your US experiences? I’m looking for any “ah-HA, you LIAR!” moment after being beaten and broken-hearted by this movie. Can it really be that terrible?
* M.M. is a biased, alarmist loudmouth, but I’m still curious.

Well, four days in the hospital cost a total of €60 to us … but as far as the Western medical system goes, we still left without an official diagnosis. So, you do get socialised medicine, but the real breakthrough will occur when we get treated with Chinese herbs at the hospital, as opposed to, “Oh, that isn’t working? We can remove that.”
Michael Moore can be a bit over-the-top, but all my run-ins with the American medical system and insurers have been pretty pathetic. I won’t go into any public disclosures on the blog.
