The A&E/BBC version of Pride & Prejudice is the best Jane Austen adaptation, hands down. It may be one of the best films I have seen. I haven’t watched it as much as Lisa, but easily it has been on more than fifty times in the house (I even ripped the audio from the series to her iPod) and we’re talking a 6-hour production. Perfectly cast. Perfectly played. Always engaging. Perfect.
So, any Austen film is held up to serious scrutiny and Becoming Jane ultimately did not pass the test. Anne Hathaway gives a decent performance, I just felt she was miscast. I understand that Austen’s life influenced her work, but for me, there were one two many references to Pride & Prejudice in the film. If this is your cup of tea, see it. Just don’t expect the chemistry of Firth & Ehle.
